July Musings - 2020

To start the month, I re-organized. It made me happy. And you know what? That's a great way to kick off the next 6 months of 2020.

Why? Well, I got to evaluate if I wanted what I have. I got to change the energy in my home by cleaning. I made this super cute sitting area that is perfectly Zoom interesting and work-appropriate!

Reading (Books):
Let's start with - I got new bookcases! Which was awesome. Because I got to completely re-arrange other bookcases, and move things to different rooms and basically make things look awesome. Also, the bookcases were only $40 each at a garage sale.

And hey!!! Remember the Little Free Library that I "Book Fairy"d in May? Apparently, none  - as in NOT ONE - of the books I left were to the potential readers' tastes as they were all still there as of July 3rd! I feel very rejected. Flip side? I left one book in the LFL at the beach early in the month and it was gone the next week. The beach LFL is always light on material.

Here's what I read this month.(And yeah, crazy amount of Kindle Unlimited. They are making nothing on me.)
- The Sundance Series by C.P Rider. (Spiked, Summoned, Earp & Chandra, Sabotaged.) (Kindle Unlimited) Fantastic series.
- Devilish Game (more Shadow Guild) from Linsey Hall. - Witch Way to Secrets and Sorcery: A Witch Way Paranormal Cozy Mystery by Jane Hinchey - it's part of a series and quite a light read. (Kindle Unlimited)
Midlife Demon Hunter by Shannon Mayer which remains awesome as part of the series. (Kindle Unlimited)
- Grimm Cove series by Mandy M. Roth (Cloudy with a Chance of Witchcraft, Hexing with a Chance of Tornadoes) which was very fun (Kindle Unlimited)
- Witching for Grace by Deanna Chase (Kindle Unlimited) - again a wonderful beach read. (My current speed).
- Forty, Fabulous and ...Fae? by Melinda Chase (Kindle Unlimited) Skip it. Not worth the time.
Heir to the Throne by Katrina Martinez (Kindle Unlimited) because even though I didn't love it - I'm a finisher + with Kindle Unlimited it's not a big deal to finish out.
- The Raven Cursed series by McKenzie Hunter (Fireborne, Silverfall, Nightsoul) which was pretty good but a touch awkward.(Kindle Unlimited)
- The Last of the Moon Girls by Barbara Davis which was super enjoyable (Kindle)
- Her Final Words by Brianna Labuskes which was breathtakingly good
- The Stillwater Girls by Minka Kent which was a great (feel-good ending) mystery. Nice plot curves in this one.
- I Was Anastasia by Ariel Lawton - finished that finally! And immediately put it in a Little Free Library

Cooking: Breakfast sausage pigs-in-blanket. Very delicious and kid approved.

Gardening: And we have tiny tomatoes and hot peppers! The strawberries seem to be done. I haven't done much but sprinkle a little fresh herbs in various things. It doesn't feel like a big gardening year.

Gratitude: Dawn beachside Pilates.  Good vets. Evening painting. Farmer's market. Perfume. Catalpa trees. Garage sales. Car singing. Tubing. New things.

Listening: Lots of Cocktails and Crooners on Apple Music. Some Pandora (I've created a Tru-Torch channel that's heavy on the torch jazz.) I've nearly sworn off podcasts. It's like brain capacity that I just can't do right now.

Watching: Really enjoyed, The Old Guard on Netflix with Charlize Theron. And I hope there is a follow up! (Minor criticism, the first action scene was a little muddy visually.) I've also been watching Raising Dion and that's surprisingly enjoyable. (At anytime the scene in Episode 3 were mom explains people treat you differently when you are Black would break my heart at any time but seemed to be more meaningful right now.). I hope there is a second season!

Wearing (Perfume and Skincare):

Perfume
I remain overwhelmed with the sheer VOLUME of perfume I own. It just never seems to go down!

Imaginary Authors
Memoirs of a Trespasser.
Scent notes: Madagascar Vanilla, GiaiacwoodMyrrh, Benzoin Resin, Ambrette Seeds, Oak Barrels. I get a lot of Vanilla and Ambrette seed with a touch of oak barrels. It almost smells like vanilla root beer. It lasts lightly on my skin a few hours and then drift off. (Nice but I would not buy)
Every Storm a Serenade.
Scent notes: Danish Spruce, Eucalyptus, Vetiver, Calone, Ambergris, Baltic Sea Mist. I think it's the vetiver but I loved this! (I had a rough weekend mid-month and decide this was my theme-perfume.)  It's airy and really is reminiscent of the sea. I had no specific open or base notes - it smelled complete, the entire time I wore it, whole. Again, the sillage is less than awesome. (I would buy this one.)
- Falling Into the Sea.
Scent notes: Lemon, Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lychee, Tropical Flowers, Warm Sand. This felt like summer one weekend. Less citrus than I'd have imagined - more tropical flowers.  I'd describe this as a very approachable fragrance. Standard few hours and then drift off.  (I would by this one - perhaps in a higher scent concentration - for beachy, easy days.)

Summary - I basically like the scents with "water" names!

Sucreabeille
- Stay Sexy - Scent notes: Tahitian vanilla, rich honey, fresh grapefruit. The honey on this lingers with the vanilla and a citrus kiss. Quite lovely. I decided this was a good way to start the month and finished off this perfume. Very delightful - would buy again! Which is good because I finished this one off the first week of July.
- We Are Stardust - Scent notes: Daisy crowns and sandalwood, a bouquet of peace lilies, vanilla cream fresh from Max’s dairy farm, and a drop of patchouli. I hate patchouli with a passion and abhor the scent of daisies (cat pee). If I would've noticed those in the notes before buying it - I would not have purchased. And I would've missed out! This is a lovely scent. For me, it's heavy on the cream and lilies with a backing of deep sandalwood and a sweet dry down to the faint touch of a creamy daisy invoking floral that has only the good parts of the daisy. Sillage is about 4-5 hours. (I bought it for the name. I wore it because I wanted to feel magical. Totally fits the bill.)
Toxic Masculinity Ruins the Party Again - Scent notes: A delightfully feminine blend of lavender, vanilla, honey nectar, and a light floral aldehyde.  I've now decided this is a weird mix of powder/honey. It's sweet, but dry smelling and goes more powder the longer it is on. (Late in the month I started getting "smoke" off this.) Nice sillage.
GlitterTrash - Scent Notes: Watermelon Blow-Pops, baby powder, fistfuls of sticky white cake, last night's champagne and coconut cream. Right off, I always get baby powder, coconut cream and the sticky white cake - also it is very possible there is glitter in this as my skin shimmers a bit. Sillage is light, about 3 hours. (I want more watermelon!)
Rictus - Scent notes: Funeral wreath of white lilies and black orchids sprinkled with a dusting of graveyard dirt.A somber wake feast of dark chocolate drenched raspberries and a shot of dark rum. I found this - with a tiny bit left - at the bottom of my work bag the week I was dealing with a particularly difficult person at work. I decided it was an omen. I get strong upfront rum and chocolate with a settle down to a lillied chocolate in about 6-8 hours. This scent basically lingers until I wash it off.
- Mouthy Broad - Scent notes: a cloud of cigar smoke, freshly picked roses, a full glass of whiskey. I don't know. This just felt like T-H-I-S  was my description of who I felt like internally. I got absolutely not rose off it. Cigar and whiskey with a floral hint. And it lasts a good half day for sillage.

OOH and I got samples! Child. It is interesting to me it smells like one of my aunts. (Howa). I got a musk gardenia off it the first time. And then a tuberose/jasmine the second time. It's a very interesting, complex "white" musk floral with extraordinary sillage.  I quite liked it, except for the memories - but I'd never pay that much!

Skincare

Day time - Started the month out with my standard a shower wash of tea tree cleanser and swipe of Rosewater Witch Hazel (Dr. Theyer's, obviously), followed by a third finger (gentlest finger) tapping into the skin of 100% Pure's Super Fruit Oil Nourishing Eye Cream.

Night time - 1st cleanse - 100% Pure's Blood Orange Cleansing Balm followed by a 2nd cleanse with  with Boxwalla's June cleanser, Nini Organics' Detox Foam Cleanser - which does the powder to foam thing that is so cool! I like it a lot - the scent is not awesome but not bad. (My Green Tea Cleanser from Odacite has a nicer smell.) And can we just say I threw the kitchen sink at it! I used the whole arsenal. I don't look young enough yet.

Things 13 Said:
She wants a snake for a pet now.

Random: I cleaned my closet and found 2 soaps! And they still smelled awesome.

Also the dog is doing great after his terrifying ACL surgery. (The surgery was not terrifying. 3 days of me not knowing why my dog wasn't walking was.) We did physical therapy - I watched vet approved on-line videos to learn how - and follow up visits to the vet and he did great. But he did have to wear the cone of shame for 3 weeks. And he really hated it.

Here is post-surgery pup!

Take-away: Give yourself some damned grace. Things are stressful and weird and it's OKAY to NOT be okay right now. Harm none, but do what makes you happy. It's i-m-p-o-r-t-a-n-t right now.

PS - Guys sorry I'm late with this post. I had some stress.

June Musings - 2020

As we close out June, I want to check in with you. Have you forgotten about self-care in all the hubub? Things feel so busy and rushed that it's easy to stop taking care of you. To stop asking for what you want - because there just  isn't time. But there is time. And it's up to you to go after what you want plus, when you are 100%, you can give back so much more to the people you love! (Put on your own oxygen mask first!)

For me, that starts with food I want to eat, fresh flowers (this gorgeous farmer's market bouquet cost $5. I am WORTH $5 and so much more! - heck, I'm worth the tiny $8 bouquet at the local florist - so I got that too for my work desk!) And setting boundaries. So this month, I did that - I hope you had a good month too!

Now, let's get to it, shall we? Here's the rundown of the month, by topic.

Reading (Books):
I read. I didn't read. I didn't finish the same book for 2 months. I  listened to books. I Kindle Unlimited binged. It's a mixed bag and I probably need throw in a few more business books!
- Book 3 (Shadows and Surrender)  of The Jezebel Files by Deborah Wilde, which remains one of the best thing I've read in some time.  (Kindle Unlimited)
- Heart of the Thief, Soul of the Storm, and Crown of the Queen by Katrina Martinez (Kindle Unlimited) the first of which really needed a better editor; the second was just less than enthralling; the third of which felt like it was written by a different author.
- Dark Secrets by Linsey Hall (book 3 in her Shadow Guild series) - again the Kindle unlimited is the BOMB.
- The Flying Flamingo Sisters by Carrie Seim (Audible). Lemony Snickett spawned a genre, apparently. Well done for all of that.
- Beyond Strange Lands by Simon Taylor (Audible). And if not for the Australian accents, I would not have bailed. (I had a long drive.)

(And we are at 66 books for the year.)

Cooking: Went to a family thing and made the Frozen Fruit Cobbler and tortellini skewer appetizers. It wasn't a big cooking month overall.

Then I went to the farmer's market on Sunday.  Kung pow chicken with yellow peppers, snow pea pods and lily buds (sauce was jarred). Frittata with asparagus, red pepper, lily buds and a touch of bacon. Tortellini with sauted king mushrooms, garlic, tiny tomatoes, a touch of bacon and fresh oregano from my garden. Chicken with lime and tomato served with fresh peas and mint from my garden. (I also bought bagels and muffins and gorgeous soap. Everyone should go to a farmer's market!)

Another weekend brought fresh zucchini, and the return of Ben's Zucchini Bread.

Gardening: And we have tiny strawberries! And tomatoes! (The broccoli all went to seed.) And I've begun harvesting the Thai basil in small quantities. (Watermelon, blue berries, Thai basil, a touch of good balsamic vinegar and a dusting of feta cheese. Scrumptious!)

Gratitude: Pool time. Chirpy cats. Gardens. Dawn beachside Pilates.  Good vets. Evening painting. Badminton family tournaments. Farmer's market. Perfume. Catalpa trees. Garage sales.

Listening: Lots of meditation. Seriously. Night meditations to sleep. Morning meditations to have a stress-free day. I'm not good at doing them on my own, but guided meditations are good. Audible currently (covid) has a number of them for free and I downloaded all of them.

Watching: Finished out Ozark. My favorite part is that Marty was from South Bend. (And, man! He was one super manipulative dude. It's like he spent the better part of season 3 getting back at Wendy for the affair.) And (spoiler) I did not see Darlene and Wyatt coming. Whoa. Next, City of Troy (Netflix). My first disconnect was in how Cassandra was portrayed. She was NOT some vision-beset girl. She was the beloved of Apollo, gifted with sight of the future - and then struck down with the curse of unbelief when she rejected his love. That is a whole different level of Cassandra than what City of Troy was rocking. I'm a little shocked I watched the whole thing. It was so.... not like it lives in my head.

Also, so much Gordon Ramsay. It's the new family show. We are watching his original British show on YouTube.

Wearing (Perfume and Skincare):

Sucreabeille
We Ride at Dawn. Scent notes: Hot black tea with honey and coffee absolute to rise early, cardamom vanilla for comfort, bitter almonds for the lost, a shot of whiskey for strength. I felt like I needed the sentiment for my dawn beach Pilates. (Yeah, that ended with me limping.) I got bitter almond with a whisper of whiskey on this right off the bat. About 5 hours in the cardamon settled in with the whiskey and almond for the ride. 5-6 hours sillage, easy. (And this one is finished. I would likely not buy it - it was nice to smell but not "wearable" - which is a different thing entirely.
Nice sillage.

Skincare

With the covid-19 masks, I feel like there is a renewed need for good forehead and eye crinkle care - because those are not the things I want people to remember about me.

- Day time - Started the month out with my standard a shower wash of tea tree cleanser and swipe of Rosewater Witch Hazel (Dr. Theyer's, obviously), followed by a third finger (gentlest finger) tapping into the skin of 100% Pure's Super Fruit Oil Nourishing Eye Cream. After that - all bets are off. Since we've hit summer, I've been mixing Earthwise Farizad's Veil mix-in sun protector with the Sweet Briar Hydrating Nectar by Heart of Gold (August Boxwalla find). But the 2nd week of June I started using the Sweet Briar as a base on my face and then mixing in the Veil to Earthwise Magical Babassu Face Oil. This oil is amazing, it lays on the skin for about 90 seconds and then just melts in. I don't feel oily - just super moisturized and non-crinkly.

- Night time - I'm just a box girl. I'm second cleansing with Boxwalla's June cleanser, Nini Organics' Detox Foam Cleanser - which is a little greener  + baking soda smelling but does the powder to foam thing my Green Ceremony Cleanser by Odacite does! (I've temporarily suspended using the Green Ceremony Cleaner to enjoy this new one.) BTW- the Nini cleanser does not have baking soda in it - it just smells a bit like that to me. (Reminder - 1st cleanse is always 100% Pure's Blood Orange Cleansing Balm - which is my second favorite and much more affordable than my actual favorite. It also melts off stubborn eye make-up.) After this combo - my skin is perfectly clean and so balanced it almost doesn't feel like I need a night cream. But I'm over 40 - so night cream happens. As the heat has been rising, I've lightened up. I've been switching off between Sweet Briar Hydrating Nectar + 100% Pure Multi-Vitamin + Antioxidants PM Eye Treatment OR (from the April 2020 Boxwalla beauty box) a quick sandwich of Monastery's XX Rose Glycolic Gel/100% Pure Multi-Vitamin + Antioxidants PM Eye Treatment/Aloe Hyaluronic Moisture Boost.

And again - the Boxwalla Beauty box is absolutely the best way to sample high quality, "green" skin care. It has great options. It's affordable. And the products are amazing - I would have never found most of these brands without the box!

Also , the June box came with ridiculously expensive hand cream. Which I took to work to use as I sanitize many times a day there and deserve to have nice things at the office. When paired with my Afternoon Mist (SpaRituals) nail polish - I think this is a winning combo!

*And we win! I had random person at the grocery store tell me I have flawless skin.

Let's have a minute for straight talk on good skincare and time. I buy good products. (I also eat decent food and stay out of the sun.) And I spend 3-5 minutes morning and night caring for my face and neck. I'm worth 6-10 minutes a day. Aren't you?

Indulgence - Also I purchased a few soaps from my favorite local soap maker. (Picture left of the one I opened this month. ) Plus I found a new one who makes the cutest gift bags at the farmer's market! (Mine did not photograph well but here's a link to her Etsy.)

Things 13 Said:
(Eating almonds) Don't these have cyanide in them?
Me: No. But you are correct that cyanide smells like bitter almonds.
Her: What food has cyanide?
Me: Apple seeds and cherry pits in minute quantities. That's why we don't eat them.
(This has me reconsidering my perfumes with a bitter almond scent....)

In other news, her new BFF's name is Buck. (Horse camp.)

Random: Founder's Mas Agave is the perfect summertime beer. Hands down. (Note to self - buy as much as you can when it comes out in early May.)

And...the dog tore his ACL (technically CCL, because - canine.) Expensive surgery to fix! And hey - did you know they do post-surgery physical therapy on dogs? Yep, it's a thing - and I'm learning how to do it! (Next career???)

Take-away: If you don't value yourself, it will be hard to accept that others value you. Learn to value you - and you'll be surprised what else you find along the way.

January Musings - 2020

Fresh year. Fresh start. Time to shake out a few changes.

Books: I like to start the year with a book to set the tone for the year. (Last year it was LaRae Quy's Mental Toughness for Women Leaders.) For 2020, it was Marianne Williamson's The Law of Divine Compensation

Kindle Unlimited rocks. Favorite author Linsey Hall has opened a new series, The Forbidden Fae. I started with Crown of Fire (Book 1) and Fate of Fire (Book 2). I also picked up Witch Way to Death & Destruction by Jane Hinchey. Unexpectedly enjoyed What the Wind Knows by Amy Harmon more than I thought I would.

Goal this year is 104 books. Standard tracking on Good Reads. Counting the audio books (noted below), I'm at 8.

Cooking: Well, I made Frozen Fruit Cobbler several times. And enchiladas. Favorite sauce recipe from Fast, Fresh and Spicy Vegetarian Cooking. (Best new filler was a rice, black bean and olive stuffing. Quite good.)

Gratitude: Change is a mindset. Nice candles. Good skin care. Desk flowers. Sweet, purry cats. Friends who are good photographers. Mail delivery. Good news. Bunny tracks in the snow.

Listening: Dave Ramsey podcast. I got an Audible trial and listened to the Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo.  Also Trevor Noah's book, Born a Crim. And Faith Hunter's Junkyard Cats which was surprisingly engaging.  Not thinking audio books are my thing. I get bored of them.

Perfume: I got bored. I could not exist with just the scents I had - Library of Flowers' Willow & Water in solid perfume and spray, the tiniest bit of Strange Invisible Perfume's Magazine Street, and essential oil roller of Honeycomb to match my favorite ZuriBella lotion. Especially since the Magazine Street had turned to a weird diesel sent base. I think the temperature change of travel was bad for it.

Find of the month -new perfume company! Sucreabeille. And they offered a sampler kit! You know I ordered it. (I was a little bit conservative as I only ordered a sample of 5 as I could've ordered 15...And, I may have, late in the month when I discovered the small sized option.) But, here are the larger sized I originally ordered before I found the minis.

  • Stay SexyScent notes: Tahitian vanilla, rich honey, fresh grapefruit
    • This has beautiful holding. The grapefruit and vanilla fades off pretty quickly and the sweet honey lingers.
  • I come from a Long Line of Terrifying Women Scent notes: A swirl of rosewood, whiskey, and amber, with a sprinkle of gunpowder, a drop of guiac wood, and tobacco absolute.
    • I love this one. It's more feminine than it sounds.
  • Frozen Moon Scent notes: crisp winter evening air, frost, sweet sugar plums swirl with delicious marshmallow.
    • The sugar plums are a bit like raspberry and sweetness. That's the lingering scent. The frost of a crisp winter evening is the top note.
  • Out WestScent notes: a gourmand swirl of honeyed chocolate with a smokey undertone of palo santo. Sandalwood, black musk, coumarin and a drop of camphor create a mysterious, dark undercurrent
    • The camphor hits first and you have a "WHAT" moment because it's got a medicinal scent. But it fades to warmth of the honeyed chocolate and sandalwood as the lingering dusky scent.
  • RESPECTScent notes: your mother’s expensive cold cream that she dutifully applied every night and now you do, too, mixed with fragrant, sumptuous black cherries.
    • Sweet is the overwhelming note to this. I can't pull out cherries or cold cream but I do get a cupcake-y, rich vanilla that feels "adult", like alcohol.
Also in the scent category but the solid version, I've gone a little bit candle happy. And because I'm a serial sharer, I want y'all to know about these great companies!
- Fresh Coast Candles (I got Sleeping Bear)
- Novelly Yours Candles (I got Castle Whitespire and Blossoming Dusk)
- Wicked Pop Candle Co. (I got Six Impossible Things, Girl Boss, and  - I think I need the Veronica Mars one.)

Random: Somedays I think American society is losing the meaning of words. I hear so many words mis-used on an almost daily basis.

Also, I killed my ankle the last 10 days of month and had to layoff the cardio drumming. Then I caught a cold and swimming was out. I need to find an indoor option that is fun but not ankle killing.

Self-Care: Skincare and Soap

"Keeping the Face Young" Skincare...
It was time to switch it up. I walked into the month using December's plan. And then, around the 10th I moved to a new plan thanks to the December Boxwalla box.

Day - For moisturizer I've been using the African Botanics Le Masque Hydralift Intense (October Boxwalla box) all over plus African Botanics's Fleur d'Afrique Oil. Winter is setting in here and my skin needs the extra moisture. This combo seems to work well with my Juice Beauty CC Cream + finishing powder. But was not as moisturizing as I hoped. So I switched out to the Mad Hippie Serum and FlowerPower (Boxwalla from a good number of months ago.) Both options worked find for under liquid make-up. The first option for days didn't work as well as powder make-up.

Night - After cleansing with my favorite 100% Pure Blood Orange Cleansing Balm and DHC Face Wash, I've been using  Mad Hippie's Vitamin C Serum then 100% Pure's Super Fruit Oil Nourishing Eye Cream and then top it off with Lepaar's Luminous Beauty Balm/ Moisture Lock + Stress Recovery (part of my December box from Boxwalla). Mid-month I switched to the African Botanicals for nights.

Report - No one thought I was 15 years younger this month.

Let's talk clean.

There was a lot of a soap again. I found a new local company, Aylamethyst Soaps at a craft fair in November. I bought a few more. (The one you can't see is the one I started with, Stardust. Lovely cinnamon and anise scent.) I like the brand - clean lather with a  bit of moisture.

Watching: I finished off Orange is the New Black; I didn't like the end. I'm loving Dolly Parton's Heartstrings. (Y'all know I love Gerald McRaney.) I re-watched Tidelands one weekend while writing. Strowlers from Prime. And I'm binging on Disney+ while we have it - the Marvel universe, Star Wars, etc. It's a lucky time to have streaming. But I'll be cutting back on services.

Take-away - Before you launch into your year, catch your balance. Once you have it, set your focus and have your best year ever.
