December 2014 Books

Oh, the holidays and a bit of time-off! Which means ample time for my guilty pleasure of reading "mind candy" - in this case, of the steampunk genre - to wind down and defrag from the stresses of life.

The recently re-discovered Parasol Protectorate series - Changeless, Blameless, and Heartless - captured my attention. I've got Timeless on order. Plus Gail Carriger's second series in the "steampunk" world she created.

  •  (And who knew about steampunk as a thing? I certainly didn't!Love the visuals!)

Also, the end of a favorite series - The Witch with No Name by Kim Harrison. (And I've read her Dawn Cook stuff, too. She even tweets stuff that's actually interesting! So many authors don't, which was the saddest discovery of Twitter for me.)

And Magic Breaks - I don't actually like the series, I'm still trying to figure out the whole Russian mythology angle.

Seeing a theme? Yep. The supernatural. I'm a touch fascinated by the American culture's current fascination with it. I've got a pet theory or two. 1) It speaks to our need to be selected as special 2) And/or the supernatural are the next generation of superheroes due to the lack of phone booths. This may merit further study...

Other post of potential interest:

To read a bit more about the books (including what I didn't say), have a look at "On The Shelf."
