Lately I think a lot about different life phases and the music that may accompany them. In TV and movies, music helps set the mood and cues us into the scene expectation. I can think of a lot of situations where that might come in handy.
- The theme from the Love Boat for first dates
- The theme from Mission Impossible when your boss gives you a new assignment
- The theme from Law and Order as you lecture your teenager
- The theme from NCIS when you check up on your spouse
As I've mentioned in another post on music, I love music. It is part of the fabric of who I am. Music plays in the background of my world nearly constantly - at work, in the car, while cleaning house (Garbage, Version 2.0!), as white noise when I sleep, etc. In a lot of ways right now, Florence + the Machine's Shake it Out is kind of my mantra - with occasional forays into Carly Simon's Coming Around Again. I wake up hearing them. They comfort me in times of stress. They have become my musical talismans. Others may find it silly, but they give me strength.
Is there a soundtrack to your life?
Take-away - Whatever strengthens you - however odd it may seem to others - is what you need. Embrace what brings you joy.
